5 Mexican Restaurants in Munich – Where Taco Culture Thrives

München Stadium in Munich

We’re landing in the city of Munich to take a closer look at the Mexican food you can find here – and it has pleasantly surprised me. Munich keeps the standard of Mexican cuisine as high as Berlin and Hamburg have shown in their own authenticity checks. My Mexican restaurant guide shows that these five spots are among the most authentic Mexican restaurants in Munich.

Whether you’re craving tacos de suadero, the classic taco from Mexico City, or birria, the signature dish from the state of Jalisco in central Mexico, these restaurants offer different experiences, but all with true Mexican spirit.

Reminder: The scores in my authenticity guide only rate the Mexican offering of each restaurant – not quality, taste, service, or heat level. However when authenticity is there, usually good food can be found. You can find more details in my restaurant guide on picosa.co.

Restaurant Tacos y Tequila, Schwabing

59 points – Reinvention with an Authentic Heart

This place really surprised me in a good way: after a complete concept overhaul in summer 2025, a restaurant that once featured chicken wings on the menu became a real Mexican taquería. The change was definitely for the better – the old 2019 menu had very little to do with Mexico.

Today you’ll find a structured menú with classic taquería-style tacos and other authentic treats. The offer is broad: tacos and tostadas with a wide range of authentic Mexican flavors based on beef, chicken, pork, and fish, plus a fair selection of vegetarian options. The quesos fundidos (here called “cazuelas”) round off the menú perfectly.

The drinks menu boasts more than 50 tequilas and mezcals, and cocktails featuring Patrón make it clear this is not your standard cocktail bar. Their website gives you all the information you need to plan a visit.

La Taquería by Cometa, Altstadt

50 points – Veteran of the Scene

With more than ten years of experience, Cometa is a true veteran of Munich’s Mexican scene. Today they run two shops, offer catering with a food truck, and even have an online shop where you can get Mexican kits – ready-to-eat packages produced by Cometa in Munich, plus original products from Mexico.

The taquería tries to combine a small shop experience with a new way of ordering food in Germany. While the shop offers a small selection of popular Mexican products, there are also taco packages (apparently their own production) that you can heat up at home – similar to a taco street stand in Mexico where you buy your fillings by weight.

The classic taquería vibe comes with a compact taco menú dominated by meat tacos and Mexican classics like carnitas or cochinita pibil. A real highlight are the homemade tortillas – even if they use masa harina instead of cooking their own nixtamal it is still a sign of quality.

Taqueria con Salsa, Rosenheimer Platz

43 points – Mexican dream came true in Munich

Legend has it that a Mexican dreamt of opening a real Mexican taquería in Munich. That dream came true in 2024, starting with a pop-up dinner that quickly found a permanent home in Munich Market (Rosenheimer Platz), where Taqueria con Salsa now runs a truly authentic taquería.

The menú is compact and focuses on real classics from Mexican taquerías. Suadero and lengua – top specialties at Mexico City taquerías – look especially tempting, as does birria estilo Jalisco, a specialty from that Mexican state. Vegetarians don’t have many options, but the veggie choices they do have look very promising.

It’s unclear whether they hand-press their tortillas, but they definitely use nixtamalized masa harina, which speaks for authenticity and quality. Their Instagram presence is especially original – they share photos and videos from real taquerías in Mexico.

CONDESA, Münchner Freiheit

38 points – Chilango Style To Go

Since 2017, Condesa has been serving Mexican fast-casual food in Munich and now runs three locations. The name probably comes from one of Mexico City’s most popular neighborhoods, famous for its restaurant and bar scene – a good sign. Besides the branch at Münchner Freiheit, you’ll also find Condesa at the main station and in Sendling – three spots for authentic Mexican fast-casual food in Munich.

You’ll recognize the concept from elsewhere in Germany: you choose a base – tacos, quesadillas, or burritos – and then your filling. The difference here is that there’s also an ensalada option and, as a big surprise, a truly authentic Mexican burrito from northern Mexico, filled with beans, cheese, and salsa. Simple, vegetarian, and delicious.

A nice bonus: you can choose the heat level of your salsa, so there’s no excuse not to try a proper taco. The drinks menu covers all the Mexican basics you’d expect. On their website you’ll find the menú and more details, and Instagram keeps you up to date with news.

Comal, Glockenbachviertel

22 points – Bar with a Mexican Soul

The name likely comes from one of the most important tools in a traditional Mexican kitchen: el comal, a clay flattop used mainly for tortillas and to hold pots of guisados.

This place feels more like a bar, which explains the small food menu with just the essentials so they can focus on drinks – a bigger selection of long drinks and cocktails, including tequila and mezcal cocktails. Their tequila and mezcal selection is solid, even if none of my personal favorites show up.

The food is split between tacos and shareable plates – classic tortilla chips and three very authentic options: elotes (probably served esquites-style) and tostada de aguachile both sound very appetizing. Al pastor is clearly their trump card, but the other options also sound tasty, and overall the menú reads like something I would expect to find in Mexico City.

Mexican Restaurants Near Me in Munich

Here you’ll find the link to my interactive map of Mexican restaurants and shops in Germany. I keep adding new places – the scene is growing, even if truly authentic Mexican restaurants are still not that easy to find.

Munich shows me top options for Mexican food – on paper, all the restaurants in this post look like very authentic Mexican spots in the city. Bringing the menus to life is another story: some seem to be cooking at a very high level, while others look a bit inconsistent based on reviews, but overall Munich definitely has a vibrant Mexican food scene. Interestingly, the food scores are quite similar across these places – the biggest differences show up in their Mexican drinks offering.
