4 Mexican Restaurants in Hamburg – Authenticity Champions of the Hanseatic City

Hamburg Port

Hamburg has a growing scene of Mexican restaurants, but with so many options, true authenticity can be hard to find. Still, there are some great spots, and in this post we start with four authenticity champions that deliver not just quality, but real Mexican flavors.

Compared to Berlin, where authentic Mexican restaurants are much easier to find, Hamburg’s Mexican scene is built around fewer, but much stronger authenticity champions.

Whether you’re craving traditional tacos in a classic taquería setting or contemporary Mexican cuisine in a modern space, these restaurants offer different experiences – but all of them deliver genuine Mexico flavor.

Reminder: My points focus on the Mexican offering of each restaurant – not quality, taste, service, or heat level. You can find more details in my restaurant guide.

Juan sin miedo | Taqueria, Eimsbüttel

64 puntos – No fear of being authentic

This taquería is a true veteran of Hamburg’s scene and has definitely earned its top spot. Juan sin miedo, which translates to “Juan without fear”, stands out with its “costras” – a crispy cheese crust that forms when melted cheese clings to the tortilla and turns crunchy. This technique is popular even in Mexico City, but not that easy to find – a detail that shows someone here really understands traditional Mexican taco craft.

The menu focuses entirely on the taco experience, with an impressive range of traditional meat tacos and solid vegetarian alternatives. The drinks menu is a highlight of its own: an impressive mezcal selection that’s worth exploring, plus a good tequila line-up and traditional non-alcoholic aguas frescas.

Juan sin miedo proves that authentic Mexican food is absolutely possible in Hamburg – a full dinner packed with Mexican flavors and plenty of reasons to have a good time with your people.

Holy Taco, St. Pauli

63 puntos – Traditional Tacos, Modern Setting

Right on the Reeperbahn, Holy Taco has proven that authentic Mexican food also works in the heart of the party district. “Modern local, traditional tacos” – that’s how they describe themselves, and that’s exactly what they deliver. This taquería-style restaurant puts tacos front and center and offers shared plates to kick off the evening.

On weekends you’ll find true breakfast classics like chilaquiles or huevos divorciados – dishes that show someone here understands Mexican cuisine beyond tacos. Their different meat taco specialties are complemented by solid vegan alternatives.

The drinks menu is especially impressive: enough mezcals and tequilas for a proper digestif, plus refreshing micheladas to fight dehydration. Website and Instagram make it clear: this is a great choice for traditional Mexican food in an authentic atmosphere.

La Casita Azul, Ottensen

54 puntos – Mexican Entrepreneur Project

Brand new in town – on 12 September 2025 La Casita Azul will only be one year old and appears to be a project by Mexican entrepreneurs. Although it’s not completely clear, La Casita seems to have two locations: one in Altona and one in Ottensen. You notice it right away: at the top of the menu you’ll find the specials, which give you a feel for contemporary cuisine with Mexican influence and traditional elements, available until 15:00 hrs.

From 16:00 hrs onwards the authentic taquería-style menu takes over, with classic meat options and a smaller but strong section of creative vegan alternatives. Of course there’s beer and cocktails, plus a small but solid selection of mezcals and tequilas.

The website only offers limited information, but Instagram and Google Maps give you a much better impression. La Casita Azul looks like a strong player in Hamburg’s landscape of authentic Mexican food.

Mexiko Strasse Taquería, St. Pauli

46 puntos – Veteran of the Scene

At Mexiko Strasse Taquería everything revolves around tacos – and it has been that way for years. The small starter section presents different versions of totopos (Mexican for tortilla chips) with guacamole and fried beans, and then it’s straight on to tacos.

The taquería offers a very interesting and traditional taco menu with dishes from different regions of Mexico, plus several creative veggie options that will definitely keep vegan guests happy and satisfied.

There’s a small but solid tequila selection and an even more interesting line-up of mezcals – all 100% agave spirits. You’ll also find a good range of traditional Mexican cocktails and micheladas. On the website you can see the basics and the full menu, while social media gives you more of a feel for the space, the tacos, and the overall vibe.
