Cologne has a growing scene of Mexican restaurants, but with so many options, true authenticity can be hard to find. My Mexican restaurant guide has identified these two Mexican restaurants in Cologne as especially authentic – places that take Mexican traditions seriously and deliver real Mexico flavor.
Whether you’re craving trompo al pastor right by the Rhine or traditional guisados like at your abuela’s, these restaurants offer different experiences, but all with truly Mexican flavor.
Remember that my restaurant guide rates only the Mexican offering of each restaurant – not quality, taste, service, or heat level. Still, authenticity in the menu is usually translated into great food. You can find more details in my restaurant guide.
Los Carnales, Agrippinawerft
81 points – Taquería Vibes with Cantina Drinks
Los Carnales has chosen a name that is just as Mexican as the concept itself. “Carnales” – a popular way to say brother or close friend in Mexico City, originally coming from the working class – is now used by Spanish speakers everywhere when they meet a Mexican. This restaurant seems to be just as authentically Mexican as its name.
The location is hard to beat: a spacious restaurant right on the Rhine with a large terrace and river views. I can easily imagine having a few micheladas there and soaking up the Mexico feeling. The food would make you think you’re in a taquería, but the drinks menu transports you into a Mexican cantina – an interesting mix.
The heart of the concept is the al pastor offering, which runs throughout the menu – they call it “Trompogrill” and clearly understand the traditional idea behind it. The menu presents authentic Mexican dishes: trompo al pastor, pollo pibil, and other classics. The agave spirits list is especially impressive, with 100% agave tequilas and mezcales artesanales, plus all the Mexican beers from the Modelo family, including my favorite Negra Modelo.
Los Carnales also offers food truck catering and has a solid online presence where you can find all their information and specials.

Casita Mexicana, Südstadt
65 Points – Pioneer with Guisados like Abuela’s
A pioneer of authentic Mexican food in Cologne: the story of three brothers who brought real Mexican cooking to the city back in 2010. Fifteen years later, Casita Mexicana runs five locations in Cologne – a testament to their authenticity.
What makes Casita Mexicana special is its focus on Mexican guisados or cazuelas – traditional dishes similar to stews. The restaurant serves rice, beans, and other sides separately so you can put together an authentic taco de guisado experience, just like in Mexico City. We haven’t seen this kind of menu in our restaurant guide until now, and it’s the kind of food you remember from your grandmother. Just make sure you arrive hungry, because every bite is packed with flavor.
The restaurant follows a popular format we’ve seen in other cities: you choose a base (tacos, burritos, quesadillas, salads, rice bowls) and then a filling. The starters are all designed for dipping with chips – salsas, guacamole, beans, even tuna, plus a Mexican take on nachos with refried beans and salsa verde.
Five vegan and five meat guisados, all prepared in an authentic Mexican style. The drinks list mixes European and Mexican options, with creative margarita variations and several mezcal cocktails, all defined by their citrusy character.
They have a strong web presence with a website and active Instagram account, where you’ll find everything you need to visit them at one of their five locations in Cologne.
