Finding Mexican Products in Berlin’s Spanish Delicacy Shops

Berlin’s Spanish delicacy shops have been importing Latin American products for years. The shared language makes it cost-effective for these Spanish shops to expand their selection with Mexican specialties.

Discovering Mexican Food in Spanish Delicacy Shops

These Spanish delicacy shops primarily focus on Iberian products but also carry a selection of Mexican specialties. Here you’ll find Mexican chili sauces or mole pastes alongside jamón ibérico and Manchego cheese – a practical addition for anyone who appreciates both cuisines.

Aquí España

This small delicacy shop has been in business for over 45 years and boasts a special highlight: an adjoining café where you can taste many of the products on offer. In addition to Spanish products, you’ll also find a small selection of Latin American specialties. Despite 45 years in business, the shop has barely modernized, as you can see from its website. Many Mexicans used to recommend this shop because it was one of the few places to find Mexican products. These days, though, the competition has become more reasonable.

La Bodega Berlin

This shop isn’t purely Spanish but positions itself as a Latin American supermarket with European products. Particularly noteworthy is the nice selection of Mexican dried chilis and grain products, including beans, tapioca, and South American corn varieties like choclo and purple corn, which is used in Peru for chicha. The Mexican section offers good variety in tortilla brands from European production, which allegedly use masa harina from Mexico, as well as various chili products from salsas and moles to adobos, rajas, canned goods, and hot sauces. La Bodega apparently has two locations in Prenzlauer Berg – besides the main store on Senefelderstraße, there’s a considerably smaller shop on Schwedter Straße.

Spanische Quelle GmbH

Interestingly, “Spanische Quelle” is actually more of a Portuguese shop, founded in the 1990s by two Portuguese brothers in Berlin and initially focused exclusively on Iberian products. In 2010, the first Mexican and Latin American foods came into the inventory, certainly due to the growing Latin American scene visible in Berlin. The former location near Checkpoint Charlie was exclusively for B2B customers and was located in a basement, but end customers could buy these products at the now-closed “Super Iberico,” which featured Spanische Quelle’s products. Today they focus on Iberian products and carry a small selection of Latin American items.

Mitte Meer

As the name suggests, you’ll find many products from the Mediterranean region in this delicacy shop – Spain, Italy, Greece. Since fish is eaten a lot in these countries, you can expect a large fish counter here and an extensive selection of frozen products from this region, often in better quality than in regular supermarkets. Nevertheless, Mitte Meer also offers a small selection of international products, including some from Latin America like the popular mate for Argentinians or pisco from Peru, and of course Mexican classics. The Mexican selection is small but sufficient for a quick Mexican dinner. Mitte Meer now has four locations in Berlin (Prenzlauer Berg, Schöneberg, Zehlendorf, Charlottenburg) and one branch in Munich.

What These Shops Offer

These Iberian delicacy shops are primarily specialized in Spanish and Portuguese products. Many also carry a limited selection of Latin American items, as they appeal to similar customer groups and sometimes use the same importers.

Mexican Products: Specialized vs. Spanish Shops

These Spanish delicacy shops differ from international supermarkets or specialized Mexican shops through their broad B2B business and focus on premium products. Many also supply restaurants and food establishments. The Mexican products here are usually a supplement to the main selection – often in smaller variety but chosen to suit their target audience.
